Van Tassel Mountainway - This is a steep fireroad climb that is seldom travelled by bikers. You will ascend 3100 vertical feet in the first four miles. The views above the valley are spectacular. This trail is often closed during the fireseasons and watch for horses and hikers. After about 5 miles, you will reach another junction which leads upwards to the Rincon trail or downwards towards Monrovia Canyon trail. Turn left and proceed downwards towards Canyon park.
From this point there are trail markers and maps posted. There is also a public restroom and emergency call box available. There are a handful of hiker destinations on this trail.
Once you reach the Saw Pit Dam, the fireroad turns into asphalt. Continue onwards towards Canyon park. For the return to the start, take North Canyon Blvd down until you exit the park. Continue onward down thru the neighborhood. The road will turn left but stay on N Canyon oad. Be mindful of the traffic signs as opposing traffic does not stop. Continue southbound on past Foothill Blvd to Colorado Blvd. Turn left and go until it ends. Turn right on South Shamrock Ave and then turn left on Royal Oaks Drive. Go eastward on Royal Oaks Drive all the way to the end where it rejoins Encanto Parkway. Turn right and the Encanto Park will be on your righthand side.
