Millennium Trail - Calabasas

The Millennium Trail forms a 13 mile loop that can be accessed from several different trailheads. I will describe the Bark Park entrance because I think it is one of the best ways to access the network of new trails in this area. The Bark Park is located on Las Virgenes Road about 1 mile south of the 101 freeway. Heading towards the ocean it will be on your left hand side just opposite and past Arthur E Write Middle School. If you get to Lost Hills Road you have gone too far. The trail itself takes off from the North end of the Bark Park just outside of the fenced off dog area. The following link, though not up to date about the current conditions of the trails does off some great info on the area and directions to the access points.

  2. Overgrown - Weeds and mustard have swallowed up this trail.Does the county maintain this trail? Can local bike clubs weedwack without some kind of permit? Advice?

  3. The Millenniumm Trail is in great shape. Many thanks to all those who helped clear the severe mustard weed overgrowth. The trail surface is packed and very rideable with the exception of some of the extremely tight switchbacks. Still some low hanging branches in spots and some minor brush that can be pushed aside. This trail can actually use more riders to help keep it clear and rideable so get out there and enjoy some sweet singltrack in LA County!

  4. Trail is doing well - Rode the trail again yesterday (7-24) and it is firming up quite a bit in the just completed sections of the trail. The trail is clear of brush and rocks and is a great addition to Santa Monica Mountain riding. I recommend riding in the counter clockwise direction. This has you go up the "Way to Tight" switchbacks and lets you ride down some fantastic singletrack. This trail bakes during hot conditions and yesterday can attest to that. Best left of 70 degree and below days, though when a breeze hits it can be nice in warmer condition. Two notes about trail: The trail has been opened all the way to Parkway Calabasas on both ends now and there is one section, about 1.5 miles worth, that is currently closed while they do some pipe work for the houses above. The closed section does have a detour around it and is in the Northwest section. Happy riding.

  5. Millennium Trail - The Millennium Trail is now complete. Within the last week the full loop of the Millennium Trail was finished and this trail is going to be a blast for mountain bikers. There are a couple of things to note. The trail is still loose in some places, especially where the last section of the trail was completed. Finding the beginning of the Trail on the South end of Parkway Calabasas is a bit tricky. Just walk your bike up the water runoff ditch about 50 feet that is located just outside of the guard gate entrance. You cannot miss it. The Switchbacks on this trail will challenge the best of Switchback riders. They built them in a very funky way where the back of each switchback has a ditch dug into it. Frustrating as hell and will probably cause serious problems during heavy rains. I have never seen another trail system that has used this technique. Not sure what the builders were thinking. Beyond that the Switchbacks, and there are a lot of them over the whole 13 mile loop, can be quite tight and in two areas offer quite a bit of exposure. That being said this trail system is a blast and will only get more fun as a few storms and some use should firm up the dirt. Lost of steep climbs, mixed with fast and smooth downhills and a loop that is made up of 95% single-track is going to make it hard to beat. Some fun creek crossings very nice bridges and great views of the surrounding areas make it a great destination ride. Add that into the many other trails, Cheeseboro, Malibu Creek State Park and other surrounding areas and you have some amazing riding to do. Get out and enjoy.

Please note that the link below is out of date as to how much of the loop is open and the names of the trails. I am sure it will be updated soon and then it will be a great source of information for this area. It is the best source I have found to this point considering the trail system here is so new.
