Black Gold - Newhall

use the gas station on the corner of Sierra Hwy and San Fernando Rd. in Newhall right off the 14 fwy. There is a dirt parking lot behind the gas station that I believe is some sort of park n ride. It is just a short 5 minute ride south on Sierra Hwy (you will pass eternal valley on right.) after the short climb, there is a break in the center divider where you can make a left turn into the turnout where the white tube gate is with all the padlocks. Ride up the road (Remsen st. if you want to mapquest it.) There are orange and yellow arrow markers on the ground to guide your way. I think by looking at the map ahead of time, you will get the feel for the flow of the circuit. It is a loop trail that takes existing paved roads to the highest point. The dirt starts when the trail begins to decend. By following the markers, you will climb two additional hills and do two fun techincal drops, ending up back at the white locked gate where you first entered. It takes about 25 minutes for the loop, and there is 3 different endings on the final hill that all end up in the same place. Very fun if you are limited on time and just want a fun ride.

  1. This trail is now overgrown and needs work due to a lack of use. It was awesome, but needs some work!

  2. Where Is It - Is this trail North or South of Sierra Hwy?

  3. Watch where you park - Just a quick heads up, those who use Black Gold try not to park by the trailhead, instead use the more public park n ride by the gas station down at the corner. My friend got his truck broken into two days aqo and he was only gone for an hour. Even if you have to ride a little more PLAY IT SAFE.

  4. Black Gold - I heard this trail was carved by mountain bikers for mountain bikers. This is a great trail with a technical climb to multiple choices on the decents. The wooden stuctures along the trail make this technical and fun. Also check it out at www.chaingangmtb.com

  5. Black Gold Loop - Paved till you begin to descend, mostly dirt singletrack, a few areas of pavement stitching together trail sections. It has a few steep drops, but nothing too technical.
