Was this really necessary??!?!

All the way back to the Nike base. Watch out up there; it looks user friendly, but is soft in spots, and will eat your front >8-^{

BASTARDS!! Those grader driving vandals have ruined Westridge. What was once sweet single track used by hiker, biker and dog walker is now a barren wasteland. Thanks a lot for making our beautiful trail an ugly slagheap. As usual us, the actual users, only find out about it after its been done. Some kind of explanation as to why they saw fit to destroy several miles of trail would perhaps be nice...

    Yes, it's a dang shame...but...

It's hard to tell in this shot, but I have noticed that about 20% of the sumac in TSP is dead of drought. We're not talking 'dry for now, but it'll be back' - this is D E A D dead! It's also affecting many of the trees in Topanga Canyon, oaks, eucs, willows, pines.

Considering the number of times I've seen nouveau hippies enjoying Ma Nature's Private Reserve at the top of Broken Arrow, this grading was probably a good call.

!?! Tom? I say WTF!?? I mean, I'm sure we could be completely fire-proof and smoke all the fatties we want, if we would just live in a total concrete environment. Instead of Tree people we could just carry cinder-blocks and gravel with T-shirts that read 'Bent 4 Cement'. When you cut top soil like this, in my experience, bad things begin. With all due respect, I must disagree. Carving is not a cogent answer. Maybe release a work-camp or two to thin out the dead vegetation? But, carving makes no sense; especially, just yards from a fire-road. But, like femur-boy said, peace-out and pray for LIGHT consistent rain. Not the kind that will bring a shaved mountain of mud down down west-ridge.

I do agree...the grading is unnecessary. But it does need to be cleared. This is about the driest I've seen it ever. Maybe they should have used one of those firefighting 'drums' that just flattens everything.

And the 'hippies' comment was light sarcasm. You know me! :P (you can't see it, but there's a tiny Escher print on the tongue I'm projecting!)

Come on, you all act like you are surprised. Let me explain and present the facts about this stuff:

    - It is horrible and illegal to cut a small 18", hidden, single-track trail
    - People freak out when they see wooden stunts
    - Skid marks on dirt is serious business

However, it is perfectly legal and sanctioned to:

    - Rip apart land to get large combustion engines into place
    - Demolish any natural habitat to build a 20+ acre golf course (don't worry, the snakes
and squirrels have plenty of space elsewhere)
    - Drive on 12' wide fire roads in every bit of national, state, and private forest or space
    - Create man made lakes or drain and drudge natural ones
    - Prevent natural, imminent hillside erosion

Our bicycle use on outside trails has such minimal impact on the environment that it shouldn't ever be an issue.

Am I the only one that see a blank canvas? When we get around to rain season, Westridge is going to be a completely different animal. Not to mention the natural booters the tractors unknowingly created.

This looks to me like it was done more for firebreak purposes than anything else. This is the driest year in 130 years, and everyone is bracing for a tough fire season ahead. Better this than the whole area being turned into a big ashtray.
