Tampico Springs - Gallup, NM
From I-40 go south on 400 towards Mcgaffey Recreation Area. You will start to climb into the Zuni Mts. At mile marker 0 the pavement will end and you will see a parking area on your right. The singletrack starts thru the gate to the west. You'll ride just above the Quaking Aspen Campground and cross a wooden bridge. Turn left here, this is Strawberry Trail. Follow this up to the McGaffey Fire Tower at the top. Ride straight across the parking area here to another single track. This is Tampico Springs Trail. Follow this for rocky singletrack until you get to a barbed wire fence. Cross it and continue on down into the canyon until you get to the spring. The spring runs into a steel tank out of a pipe. After the spring steer to the right and follow a faint double track that will eventually lead you to another fence. Leave the gate as you found it. If its open, its open for a reason. The double track will eventually turn back to singletrack. Follow this, and it will lead you back to the Strawberry Trail which you climbed up first. Take a right and climb the remaining 1 mile to the top. Once at the top, you'll see the McGaffey Fire Tower and parking area again. Just before the parking area, you'll see a single track trail going off to the left. This is Mike's Rippin' Trail. Follow this rippin' trail downhill until you get to a well groomed gravel road. Turn left here, ride past McGaffey Lake and back to your vehicle. You'll see it on the left.
