Ibis Mojo or Intense 6.6
Getting a new bike and am looking for som advice. Which would be better for tooling around the SM mountians on? The heavier, sturdier Intense with 6.5 or the lighter Mojo with 5.5? I'm really torn... Posted by BBBrad a 34 year old Die-hard Enthusiast riding a old bike from Santa Monica on 07/18/07

I have owned both, and it comes down to weight. The 6.6 does have a heavier feel to it, but because of the way the bike is linked, it is not necessarily sturdier. I sold my 6.6 and am currently riding a MOjo in its place. Intense 6.6's pedal as well as an Ibis, there is no doubt in my mind about that. The problem is that they tend to have a very high center of gravity. This translates into an X-country bike that has 6 inches. The other issue that I had with the 6.6 was its flimsy rear end. As you are descending you can literally see and feel the rear end sway back and forth. If you weigh over 200 pounds, this is eccentuated even more. Once you get used to the way it rides you end up compensating for the way the bike works and it ends up not being a big deal.
Mojo, Much more sturdy rear end, lighter and it comes out of the box with the best shock on the market, the Fox RP23. I do not own a Mojo as my only bike and ride it x-country only. I have seen video of Ibis trying to break a mojo with a sledge hammer and they couldn't do it, so it is sturdy. The one thing I am thinking of is how is the carbon fiber going to handle repeated poundings? Over time?
Contact me if you have any questions!!! I have a line on a used Intense 6.6 if you want to go that route!! Tom Smith Posted by TurnerRFXTom a 41 year old Die-hard Enthusiast riding a Ibis Mojo, TurnerRFX, DHS mono from Mission Viejo on 07/19/07

Thanks for the responses. Tom - you have kinda helped clarify it a bit for me. On the Intense I have heard of the swingarm wag in corners that you mention, but the person who complained about it also said it was the best bike they'd ever ridden so go figure. I have never heard any complaints about it being too weak or breaking - in fact everyone seems to rave about how tough it is. Of course I've heard REALLY good things about the Mojo. In fact the only neg I've heard is that it has a quite a high center of grav (recommended sag of only around 10%) so it can feel a little sketchy on the lower speed stuff. Tom, you mention you only use your Mojo only for XC. I'm planning on using this bike as my ONLY bike. The intense seems like more of true ALL mountain bike, while the Mojo might be better suited as part of a stable of bikes. I'm worried about how it will hold up to repeated light bashings over the years. I'm pretty sure the intense would handle it (it also has a track record). Would you agree that if you were going to buy just one bike the Intense would be a better choice? My god the mojo is a beautiful piece of engineering but is it maybe too much in the XC/trail niche to really do it all? I agree 100% about the shock - whichever bike I get, it will definately have the Fox RP23 installed. Thanks again for your comments & help. if you want an do it all bike then get a Santa Cruz Nomad frame, the rear triangle is beefy, has the vpp and it has a good 6.5" rear travel. A 150mm front fork will be good with a thru axle for not a high front for xc/trail riding yet the whole frame will be good for black diamond rides as well. If I had any money left I'd get an orange nomad and a 10th anniversary thru axle Z1 Bomber fork....sweet!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by Mongoose a 67 year old riding a Bullit Spider XVP from Hwy 2 on 07/19/07

We were just discussing this in the shop!! I am actually selling an intense 6.6 for a guy who is going to use the Mojo as an all around bike, when he buys it, and after the 6.6 sells. Anyway one of the things we were discussing about the mojo is that it is overbuilt. in other words the frame is only 1/2 pound lighter than the standard aluminum frame in the same class. i have beat the snot out of my Ibis and it doesn't phase it. My brother in law is a big wig aerospace engineer and he was checking out the frame. according to him the mojo should be stronger and have a longer shelf-life than the standard aluminum frames. he stated that the carbon fiber wrap used was a new technology that is what Northrop Grummond uses on their satellites.!!! High tech!! I would change the fork on my Ibis if it were going to be a 1 bike!! run a fox 36 Talas RC2 and call it good. Mojo's were specked with Float 36's at Interbike last year so the geometry works with a 160mm fork.
I feel that the center of gravity on a mojo is much lower than the intense. 69 degree head tube and a 73 degree seat tube give the bike a relaxed front end that enables you to get back on it if you need to. It also has a slacked head tube that makes going downhill fun!!
This is a tough call, and to put it to you bluntly you really can't go wrong with either. In fact their is a myriad of different bikes that will all function well. As was stated in an earlier post, the Nomad is also a great bike. Stiffer rear end, bombs anything but doesn't pedal as well as a 6.6. I have owned 2 Nomads and miss them on occasion.
To me the best all around 1 bike made right now is the 07 Turner RFX!! It works so well I set up my mojo in fulll x-country mode with a superlight front fork, and sold my Intense Uzzi VPX. The bike rocks!! Check it out!!
