2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Call this an All-the-Dirt story in progress, courtesy of the Viejos, but to be created by the SoCalMTB regulars and lurkers... You are invited to join the Viejos in the 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge. This is not a sanctioned event -- strictly informal, strictly on the honor system. Anyone who wants to participate is welcome. Here's the dirt on the dirt:- Event start date: January 1, 2003.
- Event finish date: First to claim it...
- Event description: Be the first to clean The Big-10 Viejo-land uphills, riding each from bottom to top without stopping, without dabbing. To the uninitiated, Viejo-land consists of three main parks – Aliso/Wood (A/W), Laguna Wilderness (LW), and El Moro (EM).
- The Big-10 uphills are:
- Lynx (A/W) - start: Wood Cyn; finish: West Ridge
- Rock-It (A/W) - start: Coyote; finish: West Ridge
- Mathis (A/W) - start: Wood Canyon; finish: West Ridge
- Meadows (A/W) - start: Wood Canyon; finish: paved access road
- Canyon Acres (A/W, sort of...) - start: Laguna Canyon Rd; finish: West Ridge
- Willow Canyon (LW) - start: Ranger trailer; finish: Bommer Ridge
- Old Emerald Trail (LW) - start: Emerald Canyon; finish: Bommer Ridge
- Boat Canyon (LW) - start: Dartmoor St; finish: Bommer Ridge
- Elevator (EM) - start: El Moro Cyn; finish: Fence Line/Toads
- BFI (EM) - start: El Moro Cyn; finish: Morro Ridge
- Remember that LW is only open to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays! As such, the first valid day to finish the contest is January 4, 2003 (unless you're one of the lucky few docents who can ride there legally anytime they frikkin' please).
- If you want to participate, just report back to the board with your status. As this is, by design, a multi-day event, you can give interim progress reports (e.g. – nailed Lynx and Mathis on 1/1/03, etc...), or you can just post your final triumph.
- First to post the success at cleaning all ten wins. Wins what...? Nothing material, monetary, or otherwise financially viable. Just a bit of bragging rights, maybe. Or maybe a fitter, not fatter, 2003????
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your quads burning at the sound of the ball dropping! (Except that night riding is verboten, so wait until morning, ‘kay guy???)Above all... have FUN! Posted by MTB Addict a old year old from Viejo-land on 12/21/02

Since I didn't get to Aliso till 2:25pm, I didn't get a chance to try the 1 day challenge- delays were due to work, tuning the loaner hardtail, and watching the coverage of the space shuttle disaster (may they RIP and families find peace as well), but I'm sure I wouldn't have cleaned them all anyway. Lynx is a dusty mess with some of the good climbing and descending lines now covered with broken branches and loose dirt. I rode a little in Aliso, met BlowBijou (aka Softcoconut) and Lagwagon (thanks for the peppers and stuff.... I ate half the jar on the way home from the ride) so the day wasn't a total waste. I'll give it a shot once I'm on the Stinky and can start early in the day to get a few more hrs of daylight for attempts.
Again, nice to meet the "co-champion" of the masochist challenge! Posted by El Jefe a 33 year old Racer riding a Kona Stinky ghetto style from RSM on 02/02/03

What about Big Bend in Laguna Wilderness? Anybody ever cleaned that one as an up?
I have plans to get a new FreeRide bike soon, and I will convert my Joker back to XC, and give Big Bend a few serious tries (less techno than Lynx but longer/steeper). Posted by Chirs from French riding a Joker on 01/30/03

Tumbleweed,
I couldnt of said or described it better. I thought it was in the bag, holding my bike over my head, totally stoked, then up comes MTB-Addict. Competition like this, is the best. Great ending. Congrats MTB-Addict for digging deep and pulling out a huge upset. Oh, I take a medium coffee of the day, make it sweet and warm.
CPOO......... You better start training now for 04, ride, ride... An LA rider can neve take a viejo down.....
El Jefe, a few of us are heading up Santiago Truck Trail on saturday, let me know when you plan on starting this all in one day climb at AV, and approximately two hours after that, I will send for the ambulance. :) If you want to meet us at santiago truck trail, 8 oclock......

- Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Congrats to both MTBAddict and Lagwagon! Job well done. The contest finale was much better than the lousy Superbowl. How great that Lagwagon cleans Lynx for the first time in his life to become the Champion, only to lose the title to Addict, just because he has yet to clean the easiest hill climb...Mathis!!! What an anti-climatic and surreal ending. The personal victory still stands, and thats got to count for something. Then there's Addict who's riding partially handicapped...in need of a hip replacement. He hears that Lagwagon has just cleaned the trail, and on his 3rd or 4th attempt that morning miraculously finds the line that takes him to the top. He later tells me that at one point in the middle of the rock garden past the technical steep sections, he gets his front tire wedged between two rocks and is balancing his bike for 4-5 seconds before deciding which way to go. Then hammers through the rocks and pedals his way to victory. Posted by Tumbleweed a 42 year old Weekend Warrior riding a Gary Fisher Joshua XO from Aliso Viejo on 01/27/03

"What section did you work on? Who else was there that I didnt see/meet?"
I was further up, working on the new section where it used to split and go high or low. Now it only goes high. I was wearing a black Intense cap and a camelback. Andy aka Rut and Terminaut were there too. We'll have Jam-R do the introductions next time. It was a big group!
I think the trail will benefit from the narrowed sections. Posted by Ladydirt riding a Lead Sled on 01/27/03

OK, I get what you're saying. I really do wish I would have come out to Aliso Saturday morning just to see all of you completing the Lynx portion of the challenge. Do you want to join me Saturday on my 10 trails ride? If I complete it, I'll want a witness....if I don't, you may have to be the one to call OC Search and Rescue. :-O
Oh yeah, did I read that a new Stinky is mine for the taking? Ooh.... as if I needed any more incentive. ;-)

Well, el jefe, I guess what i was trying to say is, it would of been nice for you to have something to look forward to, in addition to simply just getting back in the saddle. Even if it was a local, friendly competition, it is still competition.
You probably would of taken the masochist challenge, from what I heard, but you didnt. LOL :)~
Sht, if you can clean all hills in one day, on said bike, with your current condition, the first day out on the bike, I will buy you not only a coffee, but a new focking stinky! Posted by Lagwagon a 28 year old riding a Enduro Pro from Aliso Viejo on 01/26/03

- Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Lagwagon, motivation isn't the problem with me getting back on the bike...it's the dr. I promised not to ride till I get the OK from him and I've kept my promise. Maybe next time?
Congrats to all who made it up Lynx!!! That's a pretty good climb. Also, congrats to MtbAddict for completing all the climbs first and winning the masochist challenge.
Since I'm really just writhing in pain from not getting the chance to compete in this contest, I have a plan for next weekend, when I'm (hopefully) back on the bike. Care to join me? Remember, I'll be riding a 40lb 6.5" rear travel Stinky with 1400g tires and a 7" dual crown fork....after 12 and a half weeeks off the bike and only riding the roadie trainer for about 30-60 minutes per week. 40 mile XC challenge including ALL the masochist challenge uphills, and a couple bonus total dh runs. - Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Too f'ing cool, congratulations! You are way insane!
I was doing a little research to pull together a viejo style 3 park ride for tomorrow, and stumpled across the following two posts, which I laughed so hard at I felt it was my duty to post (found in Aliso woods trailhead section):
What a kook - In reference to the post below this one, and to all others like it (i.e. most of xcchris' posts), save that dribbling diatribe for the message board. It's bad enough that we have to deal with childish posers' posts bragging about bombing this, or talking crap about that. How about some TRAIL CONDITIONS? That's what this section is for. Nobody in here gives a crap that you feel special now that you've cleaned Lynx, or that you had the perfect Christmas Eve ride. People go to the Trail Conditions section to check on, strangely enough, TRAIL CONDITIONS, CLOSURES, HAZARDS, LEGALITIES, ANIMAL SIGHTINGS etc, etc. They don't check to find out whether or not you had a good ride, or whether or not you've recovered from any injuries. Could you possibly be any more self-absorbed? getafrigginlife E-mail: saveit@nobodygivesashit.com Posted on 03/26/01 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cholla/Lynx/Rock-it..up and down - My leg was still a little tweaked on Friday from A Sunday crash on Lynx, but I thought I could use a little after-work decompression ride. Entered A/W through the back side by Cholla. Riding up Cholla, I could tell that 3 days off and an easy ride on Thursday helped quite a bit. Used the 21 tooth ring on my cassette and smoked up the hill I know best. At the top of Cholla, I had a decision to make. Lynx did me in last time. I still have the gaping wound covered by bandages to show, and still a twinge of soreness. STP's advice to slow down came to mind and off I went to face my nemesis. Undulating smooth single track beneath me, it was hard to reign it in. Slight bank, unweight for the studder bumps, shift the hips a bit and pull back for the drop off mid turn. That's it, much better now. Power to the pedals on the short uphill grade, now back into the drop. Lighten the grip, sit back, let the bike go now. Less brake, just relax and ride it out. Go high on the split. HAH! I remembered this time. Now the last run out and smile at a clean run. Now on to Rock-it. Up Rock-it. My technical climbing feels good. Leave granny alone at first, you may need her later. Washboard up is rough, but just keep a smooth spin. Now the first rock garden. Stay left then slash right with the cut of the rocks. No problem. Now that tricky part. Left line again, then pedal hard across the rock face. Granny time. We gotta take this slow, Sugar. Clean. Now unweight the front for the shelf and be on your way. Next rock garden just hammer through. Weight shift back and forth. Pull back on the bars. Slide left again to take the dirt. No need to be a hero when you're having the perfect day. Hammer to the top and turn around for the descent. Let it run a bit, Rock-it is becoming an old friend. Not too much though, focus on relaxing and balance. Now back to the rock face. Slow now, easy does it. Now cut right and take a line next to the bush. Clean! First time ever. Smoke the bottom half. In the flow now. no brake on the washboard, just ride it out. On to Lynx again. Up Lynx? Why not! Not enough momentum to take the sharp rise. Had to step out of the pedals. First time my foot touched the ground today. Turn around and try again from the beginning so you can call it clean. Take the line up that caused your wreck last time. Tight sqeeze, but I got you this time. An exercise in balance for the rest of the ride. Unweight the front but don't pull too hard. Now one hard pedal stroke with a forward lean and pull back on the bars. It's there for us today Sugar. The worst is over. Take the rest with a smile. Top of Lynx, head right. Hello Cholla. Last run before dark. Use the bank turns. Unweight and drop just for fun. Tacky dirt is keeping the tires in line on turns even at speed. Run out the bottom and the perfect ride is done. Short and sweet, and my feet touched but once to pay homage to my former enemy. Gotta love it. - Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
What a day, folks, what a DAY. Woke up, early. Had some freshly brewed coffee, watched the sun rise up, and off to FOCKING lynx, baby, oh, baby, oh.
Met up with Softcoconut first. Gabbed for a minute or two, up comes Jam-R, got the crash details from his fall/collapsed lung. Up comes MTB-Addict, Tumbleweed and a few others who didnt give me/I dont remember their handles.
What a great morning. MTB-Addict has to clean lynx, and he is done. I have to clean Lynx, and Mathis. If you dont know mathis, then, I will tell you. Mathis is not hard, I do this trail probably twice a week, and I dont think I have ever dabbed on it. IN a word, Easy. SO, I have lynx and mathis.
We get to lynx. Some head up. I was almost in the back. WE all dabbed at the same section more or less. The rocky section past the ruts/steps.
Once you hit the ruts/steps, and pass it, you are winded somewhat but have to "HAMMER" past this rocky section, that last quite a while.
We make our marks on who dabbed where, and we head back down.
A few go up, jeff and his friend (sorry, bad with names). Softcoconut goes up. Jam-r, tumbleweed and MTB-Addict are down at the bottom. I head up.
Go up to the ruts/steps and softcoconut is there, saying "your forks are down, doing great". I head up. Meet the rocky section, HAMMER up the first part, head left, and Jeff and his buddy where there. They are chattering, routing me on, I am hearing them, but not making out what they say. I almost lose my balance, I am teetering with failure, Jeff screams, "Hammer Lagwagon, Hammer". Both of them are just telling me to go, go.
So, I focking go. I motor. Man, I just barreld up the stair section, travled further up then ever without a dab. I get chills going up through my head and lower neck. I FOCKING DID it. Now, I just have 200 more feet up s/t to clean, no biggie, just keep going, you past the hard part.
Jeff and his friend are fired up. They are just yelling, and the whole canyon was echoing. Later I found out MTB-Addict heard this and new he had to clean it now. I made it to the top, held up my bike, and blurred "2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge Champion".
They laugh in the canyon.
Up come a couple of helmets, up the trial, oh no, I see the sun producing sparks off their helmets, sht, did they make it?
Nope, it was jeff, tumbleweed and his buddy. They just kept going, they didnt clean it, just wanted to get on with life, lol. We all were fired up. How awsome. oh ya.
MTB-Addict, Jam-r, Softcoconut were no where to be found. Time passed. Headed back down, thinking it was bagged.
Up comes, none other, then MTB-Addict. NOOOOOOOOOO. I ask, did you "clean" it. He holds up his left hand for a high five. I shook my head, oh no.
OH NO, because I didnt clean mathis yet. mathis is easy, just didnt have time. Up comes jam-r, softcoconut.
MTB-Addict declares that we have a tie. I, agree. LOL. Yea, a TIE.
I later cleaned mathis no problem with Jam-R and Softy, and called and end to this challenge.
Lynx is a great trail. What a personal feat. If you have a personal feat, just do it. Get it down, in your head, and determine wether or not you are going to do it, and there is no other option. You just do it, do it..... It took some time, but its done.
And what made it great, is the company today. What a great group of people. What a great post! What a great challenge. What a cool place to enjoy a ride, in January, totally warm. (I am to happy, am I just sick to listen to). :)~
El Jefe, sorry you missed it. I tried to motivate you to get on the bike, give you some inspiration. SO, with that, lets try to do as many as we can in one day. I just bought a hammock, that folds in my pack(softy, it rules), i can just chill in some tree and do as many as possible. Sounds like a plan.
Tumbleweed, lets do coffee, your treat of course. Thanks in advance. Nice riding with ya.
Mtbaddict, great post. (CO-champion, :) )
Adventurich, let me know when those peppers are gone, I have more for ya.... For everyone that is.
Jam-r, soft coconut and myself, went on and did some more miles, and had a great day.
So, I end this challenge Co-champ. with MTB-Addict, and a personal challenge, there is no tie.

- Epilogue: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Lynx - 14 tries, 1 clean. You're now my biatch. (I hate that frikkin hill.)
Lagwagon - Thanks for playing. Your example pushed me that little extra bit, though I don't think I'll try Lynx again as an up for a l-o-n-g time to come. That hill sux... BTW - Good luck on MATHIS, LOL. I know, I'm a prick. If you cleaned it later this morning (gee, do ya think?), let's call it a tie, since you were the first clean Lynx...
P.S. - You're invited to ride w/the Viejos anytime. Coconut, too.
P.P.S - T-Weed owes you a mid-ride coffee at Diedrich's.
Jam-R - Glad to see you back on the bike. Once you get your missing lung back, you'll clean that suckah no prob.
Da Viejos - cool ride, cool ride. Glad you all made it out for another day in the park. Viejoland rules.

We are on for the Grand Finale for tomorrow, 7:15 at the wooden gate (number 7, not the gate on canyon vistas road, but rather the gate near cholla.)
We have Tumbleweed, MTB Addict, Softcoconut,Jam-R and myself. We need a cheer squad at the rocky section past the rutts. Posted by Lagwagon a 28 year old riding a Enduro Pro from Aliso Viejo on 01/24/03

- Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
From: http://www.drugfreesport.com/choices/drugs/ergogenic.html#A
What are the actions/effects of erythropoietin (EPO)? EPO is a glycoprotein that stimulates red blood cell production.
What are the therapeutic uses of EPO? The FDA, for treatment of anemia, approves EPO.
Why would some student athletes want to use EPO? The use of EPO is believed to increase oxygen absorption, reduce fatigue and improve endurance by increasing the rate of red cell production. Promoters of EPO claim that this drug increases the metabolism and the healing process of muscles because the extra red cells carry more oxygen and nutrients.
What are the adverse effects associated with using EPO? EPO causes an increase in the total number of circulating red bloods cells. This can lead to increased thickening (blood viscosity) of the blood. Added to the dehydration that frequently occurs in endurance sports, excess thickening of the blood takes place.
The risk for coronary and cerebral artery blockages increases when the hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells in the blood) level exceeds 55%.

BTW - I gave it 6 more attempts up Lynx this morning. No luck. I did find the proper line, though, and managed a clean of the whole chute+rock-garden section... after restarting just below the chute section. (You guys almost had to chase 2nd place, though, as attempt #6 was a mere 20' from the end of the last rock face. One minor mis- alignment caused my downfall...)

What it is, what it be......
MTB Addict, I cant even believe you drove to El Morro. You should be disqualified!!!! You cant claim the 92656, truly, you CAN not.... geesh.
Well, I rode 23 miles, and cleaned Willow, Boat Canyon and Old Emerald. SO, sunday morning I woke up feeling good, but how were the legs??? hmmm.
So, I decided to hit BFI and Elevator. So, I got in my car, LOL, and drove to El Morro. LOL (ROFLMAO) Around 8 a.m. sharp no less. Went to go PAY my 5 dollar FEE. I felt like a whimp, I felt as if I was cutting corners, using a cheat sheet, I felt like I SHOULD pay for driving here. I pay the ranger, and this couple were saddened because they had to pay, but didnt have any money. After a beg here, and one final plea, the ranger said n.o. means no. SO, I reached into my pocket (Money clip, live in south county have to have a money clip LOL) and paid the ranger and told the couple to have a great day. *-*
Back to the trails. Cleaned BFI, Down I think I can, Up Moro Canyon, up Elevator. Oh ya. Two down, two to go. SO, I bomb back down moro, back in the car, and headed to AV to claim the victory and clean lynx and mathis.
LYNX........ Started here. Went up once, and cleaned it!! Oh yes. no, I didnt. Went up twice. Went up a third time. Getting further and further. Decided to hide the mule in the bushes, slurp down some GU. Up a forth. Back down and UP A FITH TIME. I got to the top of the last rock garden-area, and put my foot down and didnt move. I just stared at my foot, and savored the defeat. Period. My foot just lay in the powdery-dirt. Defeat. OH NO, I said, one more time. UP for the sixth time, and failed immediately at the first boulder left hand turn, and called it quits.
1. Meadows 2. Rock-IT 3. Canyon Acres 4. Willow 5. Old Emerald 6. Boat Canyon 7. BFI 8. Elevator
Mathis and Lynx.
On like, my fourth try, I was battling through the section just past the brake ruts, and this guy is coming down rather slowly, and starts talking about the weather, and then I dabbed. That guy had no Idea that I was right in the middle of a technical section, on my FOURTH focking try, legs burning, trying to be the 2003 MASOCHIST HILLCLIMB CHAMPION. Seriously, I would talk about the weather at anytime, just not then...... GLTY

What it is, 1-19-03...
Coerced a compliant fellow Viejo (who asked that his real-fake name remain nameless, so let's refer to him temporarily as "Rollingshrub") to accompany me on this obsessive pursuit, where uphill takes precedence (temporarily) over "totally DH'ing, brah." He feigned lack of involvement in the event, but truth in action is more evident than words, as he bore down for the El Snoro leg of the event without complaint over lack of techno.
We did a rare "shuttle assist" to the El Moro trailhead, which under normal circumstances amounts to sheer heresy for a true Viejo, as the only PROPER way to get to El Moro from Viejoland is via the Stair Steps (or alternative fire road) to Willow to Bommer route.
We both added BFI and Elevator to the list of cleans, managing a fun diversion down Rattlesnake along the way back to the shuttle vehicle. Actually found some thrills on da Snake by aiming for the nastiest route possible down this one, then almost throwing an OTB off a steeper-than-expected stair drop just before accidently railing into a 12"x12"x8' v-rut thru the rockiest section. Good old Rollingshrub had put a bit too much trust in my warped line by following it into the fray, but we both came out with the rubber side still down -- dab-free. Whew!
Decided to leave the "extra credit" slog up Poles for another day, and loaded the rigs up for another wuss shuttle to the main entrance of A/W. From there, it was slow going up Meadows, but with both of us nailing it, legs a-quivering, to make it three down for the day.
So, the Addict ends the week with:
1. Mathis - A/W (1/3/03) 2. Canyon Acres - A/W (1/3/03) 3. Rock It - A/W (1/5/03) 4. Willow Canyon - LW (1/5/03) 5. Old Emerald - LW (1/5/03) 6. Boat Road - LW (1/5/03) 7. Elevator - EM (1/19/03) 8. BFI - EM (1/19/03) 9. Meadows - A/W (1/19/03)
Plus an Extra Credit uphill: ** Water Tank Rd - LW (1/12/03)
Remaining one(s):
1. Lynx, Lynx, Lynx, Lynx, FRIKKIN Lynx!! (1 trail, 5 failures... I will make it my biatch!)
Not sure exactly where 'Weed, er, I mean 'Shrub, stands at this point, but whether he wants to admit it or not: He's in .

Way to go Lagwagon and Jam-R. Today MTB Addict and I cleaned BFI and Elevator, then drove to A.W. to clean Meadows. Talked to Ranger Tom and he said that the SHARE group were scheduling trail maintenance all up and down Lynx on Sunday Jan. 26, so conditions will definitely change...probably get a little lose in the wash bumps just before the super technical section. It may get easier or it may not. Good Luck. I have cleaned this trail before a few times about 3 years ago, but have not tried recently until this challenge... so far this year I am 0 for 4 attempts on Lynx! Seriously, I thought MTB Addict and myself were the only ones participating..... Glad hear Jam-r is back on the bike. Cool beans...
Nailed Willow, Old Emerald, and Boat Canyon on 1/18/03...
So, thats 6 down and 4 to go. 1. Meadows 2. Rock-It 3. Canyon Acres 4. Willow 5. Old Emerald 6. Boat Canyon
Left to go 1. Mathis 2. BFI 3. Elevator 4. LYNX!
Started today, in hopes to nail lynx. From my 92656 Casa, I rode in from canyon vistas side. Up the dreaded Lynx. Dude, this trail is not easy, but totally possible. I dabbed FOUR TIMES. And, the four dabs were in the exact same spots. So, this time, after I dabbed, I tried it again. And again. And again. And I did this will all of the spots until I was able to do it. Now the magic would be roping the whole thing together. Question, go up on the right or left? I think its a matter of the lesser of two evils. I go up on the right.
Then, I went on my journey. Down stair steps. :) Love that trail. Crossed the 133, talked to ranger, signed in. Up willow. Down Emerald canyon, no braking. :)~ Up Old Emerald, at the top, threw up a lung, and put it back in.
Over to boat canyon. Down and up and down an up to Dartmoor. Had a snack under the lemon tree by the gate. Talked to some buddy on a moped, apparently Shaq bought a home over there somewhere.
Back up boat canyon. Oh yes, three in one day. Then, went over and down Laguna Bowl. Went to Cycle werks, hung out. Pedaled to stair steps, and hiked up. Over to rock-it, blew my nut. Back home, with one empty mule and a salty shirt and face.
23 miles.
Tomorrow, yes, tomorrow, BFI, Elevator, Lynx and Mathis. Better get out there.
I want some free coffee tumbleweed...... Posted by Lagwagon a 28 year old riding a Enduro Pro from Aliso Viejo on 01/18/03

Cleaned Meadows, Mathis and Rock-it this morning. One dab on Lynx, but I didn’t have the energy to go back down and start again.
I’ll try Lynx again tomorrow....maybe Canyon Acres also.
Anyway, it’s good just to finally be back on the bike.

Way to go Lagwagon... glad to see someone other than MTB Addict participating. The killer climb to nail is Lynx. The rest are pieces of cake . If you can clean Lynx, I'll buy coffee at Diedrich's in L.B.,, compliments of a fellow Viejo rider!!! Crap. You have been busy MTB Addict.
Yesterday, cleaned Canyon Acres and failed on Lynx.
I only dabbed four times on lynx, lol, not bad.
So, thats Rock-It, Meadows and Canyon Acres. Soon to be Lynx, mathis, willow and old emerald. Dude, I am into it. I just, you know, feel special to be part of this event. Oh, I almost lost a lung on canyon acres..... Posted by Lagwagon a 28 year old riding a Enduro Pro from Aliso Viejo on 01/16/03

Nailed Rock-It and Meadows on 1/11/03 and 1/12/03. (Sorry "richard" for not giving this park a break. lol
Thats 2 down and 8 to go. Anybody else doing this? Whats your status?
I cleaned Meadows first, no stopping and absolutely no dabbing, and got to the top, and gently threw my bike down, lol, and said "Ahhhhhhhh-ha-ha-ha...., 2003 Masochist Challenge number 1 DOWN.
Then I proudly told some onlookers of this challenge, they said, "wow". :) I was thinking, 'dude, its more then wow, its Masochist!'
Then on sunday, with a new chain and break pads on my hayes, I cleaned rock-it. I had a close call on the rock garden. I went up the rock garden on the right, not the left, and rode up the middle for extra credit. Number 2 down.
Looks like I am going to take the whole thing and crown myself as king of the area. Thats right, you heard me. :)

- Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Richard, while the climbs in the Santa Ana's are longer, I think MTB Addict's contest is based on cleaning some fairly technical climbs and not just long grinders. With some trails being a bit soft due to recent rains, you can count on MTB Addict to obsserve proper trail use protocol. Join the fun!
Now, the rules of "clean" are that you do each climb bottom to top with absolutely no stopping or dabbing. If you dab, you start again from the bottom. Good luck....I'm giving everyone a month head start. Posted by El Jefe a 33 year old Racer riding a Kona Stinky ghetto style from RSM on 01/10/03

- Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
you can do all these climbs or do the equivalent; going up saddleback once (harding, maple springs, etc...) Give the Aliso, El Morro parks a break on the weekend, go ride the santa ana's, there they have climbs that are longer than 1 mile. these climbs are even 8-10 miles long! leave these parks to the schleps that are riding with their kids. - Re: 2003 Masochist Hillclimb Challenge
Well, this contest is still pretty much wide open, what with El Jefe out of the running, and all my formerly serious-contender riding partners now schlepping 40+ pound freeride (freewalk?) bikes on the uphills...
I am really sorry you're missing it, Jiffy. I would've liked you in it, but, to be realistic, you probably would've nailed 9 of the 10 uphills, then, just before attempting your last Mathis uphill, managed to have a contest-ending injury biff while screwing around hucking off one of the picnic tables at TOW or somewhere... Call me, though. Maybe we can swap a pint of Redhook for a certain consolation prize. Details to follow, if you want to e-mail me.
So, to all the others out there, post your results as you get 'em!
Looks like I'm not much of a threat on this one, either, as on my one and only ride so far this year, I managed to mess up two attempts on Lynx and one attempt on Rock-It... Happy frikkin' New Year to me! Caff Man's visions of a rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth contestant were not too far off the mark after those failures. I did managed to salvage the ride somewhat, and got Mathis and Canyon Acres under my belt by the end of it, but with eight more to go for me, it's still anyone's game.
Come on, guys and gals -- get out there and try it! Don't let a viejo year-old cripple like me beat all the young bucks (and does) on this one.

You suck! I'm not allowed to ride yet or I'd be out on the hills right this second....ok not this second, but first thing in the morning. The only one I haven't done before is Boat Canyon...not sure which climb that is. The rest I've already bagged, but alas I'll have to wait, most likely a few more weeks before riding road, and another month or more till I get the go ahead to ride dirt.:-(
Oh yeah, one more climb you may want to add.... actually 2 more; Dripping Cave in both directions. Not super tough climbs, but it can get a little tricky if you're not paying attention. Posted by El Jefe a 33 year old Racer riding a Kona Stinky ghetto style from RSM on 01/01/03

Likely scenario, Caff-meister, I must agree. To project even furthur into the future, that'll be fun when people ask us, as we're cruising with them down Lynx, Rock-It, et al, in twenty or so years: "So, why is this section called Chunkblo Chute? And this next one name Hurl Hill?" "Lemme tell ya, sonny, a long time ago, must a been back in, Double-o Three or so, there was this little event called the Masochist Challenge, started by some wacko cult callin' themselves the Viejos..." Ugg--! I can see the headlines now: Orange County Park Officials Baffled Jus Messin, OC Register Staff Reporter 1/5/03 Orange County Park Rangers are baffled at the recent deaths of mountain bikers along previously innocuous trails in the South County. Six mountain bikers to date have been found expired alongside trails at El Moro, Aliso Woods, and Laguna Wilderness; with the highest incidence at Aliso Woods' rugged "Lynx" trail. Two of these cyclists were found with crazed, frozen stares and foam at the mouth, leading officials to speculate on a possible rabies factor. Others are convinced of mental illness. One hiker described a cyclist's repeated attempts to climb up the "Rocket" trail without stopping, a feat which mountain bikers refer to as a "clean": "It was pitiful," relates Gina Hyker of Newport Beach. "He'd get like 100ft. up the trail, stop, let out this horrendous cry, and turn around to try it again, over and over. I asked if he needed any help, but all he did was make some strange gesture with his fingers:
While officials continue to ponder the source of the illness, the phenomenon is proving a blessing to the local economy. Several street urchins from nearby impoverished Laguna Beach have taken to selling chains, energy drinks, and Powerbars from crude carts set up alongside county trails, reaping profit from whatever affliction has fallen on the mountain bike community.
